Expertise
Want to keep your railway running smoothly and safely? Have net-zero targets to meet? We’d love to support you with maintenance, renewal and upgrades, through our data insights. All data is related to a common infrastructure model to help you achieve your objectives. That’s why we create a 3D representation of your railway corridor, which you can access via a completely secure rail portal. This model lets you make pin-point accurate predictions to make better decisions – faster. Our frequently updated track and asset information supports the efficient management of projects in all stages of the rail asset lifecycle. Our ethos - collect once, use many times. Moreover, our RILA® measurement system enables us to capture data in remote or inaccessible areas and along busy passenger and freight routes with no disruption to services. With our Geo-data trains can travel smoother and quieter, for a safer, more sustainable world and railway industry.

Railway Challenges Met
We create a highly accurate, information-rich model of your railway infrastructure, delivered to your desktop 24/7. Translating your challenges into Geo-data requirements to provide long term support throughout the life cycle of an asset.
Design: The increasing complexity of infrastructure projects requires a fully integrated solution. Our track and asset information are complemented by geotechnical, ground investigation, environmental and surveying services to empower engineers and consultants to design better.
Maintenance: What information is available to support running assets as efficiently as possible whilst maintaining high performance? With RILA surveys multiple information becomes available, including changes in track centre line, relative track geometry, rail wear, and height and stagger of overhead line equipment (OLE).
Upgrade: How can you improve railway utilisation while staying on budget and maintaining ageing assets? Track condition assessment, gauging data, and other surveys provide engineering-accuracy Geo-data on the rail corridor, so you can understand the challenges and develop the best possible solutions. Also, our data can be used for (design) tamping and fully automating the process from survey to tamping.
RILA® - How Does It Work?
Compact and easily transportable, RILA® connects to a regular passenger train in less than two minutes. From here, it surveys the rail tracks at line speed minimising access costs and reducing carbon emissions with no disruption to services.
Our RILA® train-mounted measurement system incorporates positional sensors, lidar scanners and video cameras to simultaneously acquire point cloud data, live video footage and imagery of the track and surrounding environment. Multiple survey aspects of rail related asset performance and position are recorded to create a high absolute accuracy, dynamic view of the railway corridor.
What specific insights can I get?
Gauging clearance distances along the tracks, platform and structure gauging, but also identification of the overhead contact systems to ensure trains can pass safely and maintain the accepted safety distance to comply with national regulations. Maintenance data to assess the condition of your assets and ensure their reliability and lifespan; for example, track condition and geometry to ensure smooth and safe running trains and ballast profiles allow tamping machines to operate more efficiently and accurately to correct any defects
Identification of the overhead line equipment (OLE), extracting information from the lidar data on the location of the catenary masts, contact and catenary wires, return conductor and line feeder. Even accurate height and stagger measurements are feasible using our data.
A clear understanding of ground conditions to supplement track condition data and enable targeted intervention. Site investigations to establish the nature, extent and cause of subsurface problems including drainage, vibrations and material issues. Structural data for bridges, tunnels and trackside infrastructure to investigate problems or defects and extend the lifecycle of assets.
Manage, Integrate and Visualise 3D data
2D and 3D rail asset data is collected within a 3D model of the railway corridor or track twin accessible via a secure web portal. The 3D model replaces one-off, manual surveys with continually updated digital track data, to help engineers understand the environment around an asset. With our portal, users can perform visual inspections and download datasets, customised to their needs.

Infraestruturas de Portugal pilot: Pioneering technology
With a rail network of around 3,000 km to maintain, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) was keen to identify next generation technology to deliver safe, efficient, and accurate surveys of track geometry on its network.

Revamping tamping: supporting rail maintenance innovation
Tamping is an essential part of railway maintenance, carried out to prevent derailments. While the conventional approach creates a safe track alignment, it doesn’t optimise it. Over time, this can lead to problems. That’s why we were excited to join InnoTamp, a ground-breaking research project to improve the affordability of design tamping.

Fugro RILA® tech helps create the railway of the future
When it comes to railways, the priorities are always safety and timeliness. This requires accurate data of the track and rail corridor. Denmark boasts a railway infrastructure of more than 3000 km of tracks. And they’re using our unique RILA® train-borne survey technology to create a highly accurate, model of the railway’s infrastructure.

Building a digital foundation train protection
In the Netherlands, ProRail is developing the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). This will replace its automatic train protection system in key areas. With our RILA® train-borne survey system, a 3D real-world model of the network’s assets was created.

Over 1,000 km of Irish Rail network surveyed in just 7 days
In Ireland, we surveyed almost half of the Irish Rail network – 1,045 track km on mainline passenger routes to Cork, Galway, Westport, and Sligo. We installed the latest rapid scanning, multi-frequency radar and positioning system on a track recording train. This let us complete the survey in just seven days – with no disruption to scheduled services.
