Job Description

The Geotechnical Laboratory Technician is tasked with ensuring efficient and proper collection, testing, and analysis geotechnical specimens in the field or laboratory setting with strict adherence to accepted protocols (ASTM). Observations, laboratory findings and other data must be accurately recorded in support of engineering evaluation and other client deliverables. A successful candidate shall be able to multi-task with accuracy, work independently and/or with some supervision, track samples internally, and perform data entry into a computer database(s).

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead by example and place Quality, Health and safety, Security, and the protection of the Environment as core values while never intentionally placing employees, our processes, customers, or the communities in which we live and work at risk.

  • Ensure all activities are conducted in conformance with the company’s HSE and QA systems.

  • Perform and compute basic soil strength and index tests with high proficiency

  • Observe and follow all company safety rules and procedures.

  • Support and encourage continuous improvement of the company’s processes, including safety programs and quality management systems.

  • Knowledge and understanding of various ASTM testing procedures.

  • Complete basic soil strength and index tests following detailed instructions.

  • Able to assist senior technicians in completing more complex testing.

  • Maintain laboratory facilities and assist in maintenance of test equipment.

  • Assist in determining the appropriateness of soil samples for testing.

  • Accurately summarize test results in report form for analysis by engineering staff.

  • Perform clerical functions as required and meet administrative document deadlines.

  • Occasional travel to project sites to collect samples and/or travel between Fugro offices to facilitate sample transfers may be required.

  • Be able to travel as required, both domestically and internationally.

  • Meet all utilization goals as determined by the Activity Center Manager or supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions.

  • Possess current driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Possess the ability to obtain a valid passport for international travel.

  • 1-year experience in soil testing and testing equipment is preferred.

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an Associate degree is preferred.

  • Have knowledge of soil classification techniques

  • Be able to utilize testing equipment, able to perform laboratory equipment checks and calibrations by company procedures.

  • Have good math skills.

  • Have good mechanical aptitude.

  • Familiarity with modern office methods, practices, procedures, and equipment, as well as filing systems and business letter writing, and competent in correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic.

  • Perform heavy work -- exerting up to 50 pounds of force constantly, or a moderate amount of force constantly to move objects.
