Job Description
The Laboratory Manager must possess a thorough understanding of test procedures for all mandatory tests and integrate managerial skills with laboratory and safety protocols to ensure smooth operations. Key responsibilities include conducting tests, analyzing data, preparing specialized reports, developing new testing methods, and training technicians and laboratory personnel. The Manager must also draft detailed reports with conclusive recommendations and be knowledgeable of ASTM, AASHTO, BS, and DIN standards, as well as specifications from Saudi Aramco, SEC, MOT, and SABIC. Additionally, the Manager is responsible for managing laboratory operations in compliance with FSL QMS 17025 and ISO 9001:2008.
1- General Laboratory Supervision
Managing laboratory and field testing of environmental samples, construction materials, including geological, soil, concrete, cement, water and steel samples. Also conversant with procedures of concrete and asphalt mix design;
Make sure all laboratory and field testing activities are being carried out in accordance with applicable standard and FSL laboratory quality procedures
Coordination for project execution plans
Responsible for service and management initiatives including budget and financial controls
Lab manager must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and be able to lead and direct others
Managing laboratory facility and environmental conditions
Issuing appropriate work instructions
Ensure each equipment is in good working order and calibrations are up to date; carry out routine
maintenance as well as performance checks, when required
Purchasing services and supplies
Control of non-conforming work
Staff relation and development
Continuously improve client coordination / relation
Responsible for client focus policy and develop business relations
Service to clients and complaints
Project coordination
Ensure general housekeeping in the laboratory is well maintained all the time;
2- Quality Control
Check and sign test reports.
Identify and differentiate random error and systematic error.
Detect, reduce, and correct deficiencies in a Laboratory's internal process prior to the release of test
results, in order to improve the quality of the results reported by the laboratory.
Responsible for stopping work and resuming it when detecting a non-conforming work.
3- Quality Assurance
Problem-solving/judgment: ability to work unsupervised and observe, think critically and to solve problems using data-analysis, interpretation, and reasoning skills.
Teamwork: dedication and ability to work successfully with others in a team.
Information & Communication: ability to receive information from, and convey information to others, in a timely and clear manner, using appropriate language, and communication tools.
Client focus: ability to generate client satisfaction (internally and externally), potentially resulting in long term client relationships and additional business.
Planning & organizing: able to set priorities and determine actions, time and resources (tools, software,people, and budget as appropriate.) to achieve pre-defined goals. Monitor and manage timely delivery,
leading to reliability and client satisfaction.
4- Client focus
Ability to generate client satisfaction (internally and externally), potentially resulting in long term client relationships and additional business.. Attend meetings with client on an as required basis.
5- QHSS:
Ensure that Fugro policies and procedures are understood, implemented and adhered to by all employees.
Education:
B.Sc. or preferably M.Sc. in analytical chemistry with several years of experience are usually required for a lab manager position.
Working experience:
At least 5 years in case of M.Sc. in chemistry and 10 years in case of B.Sc. in chemistry.
Must have experience in analytical chemistry with QA/QC laboratory of good reputation. Well versed with the ASTM, AASHTO, BS and APHA Standards and ISO 17025.
Management experience:
At least 5 year of team management or supervisory experience in case of B.Sc. in chemistry.
