Job Role:
Liaise with laboratory manager and geotechnical engineer about preparation and execution of testing. Support lab operations by 1) carrying out standard laboratory tests, 2) assisting more senior Lab Technicians in carrying out non-standard laboratory tests, 3) preparing and cleaning up test settings within time, budget and quality requirements and, 4) working within clearly defined standard operating procedures. Works with close supervision. Requires preparatory vocational education (VMBO) and limited prior relevant training or work experience.
Operation
Collects soil samples at prescribed depths, performs required field test and packages the sample for shipment to the company’s laboratory.
Completes boring logs and associated paper work upon completion.
Performs basic soil classification tests and assists on more complex field tests.
Observe and follow all company safety rules and procedures.
Performs general repair and maintenance on equipment, completes administrative reports (i.e. time sheets, job reports, etc), arranges for any additional supply purchases and maintains inventory in the field and performs other duties assigned.
Maintains a line of communication at all times with the project engineer, to keep the engineer informed as to the progress of the assignment.
While working with various departments and with outside parties, individual uses tact and judgment in all personal contacts
Assists with drill floor activities as required.
Contact throughout the company and with outside contact requiring tact and good judgment.
Ability to mobilize a project from PSS to site mobilization.
Able to calibrate instruments used for testing soils.
Familiar with ISO 17025 requirements related to testing, calibrations and audits
Should have independently tested a variety of soils, rocks, aggregates, concrete and other building materials and be familiar with the usual tests Sieve analysis, FLiquid limit, Plastic limit, Plasticity Index, CBR, Core cutting method; Clay, silt & Dust content of sand;
Must also be well acquainted with Industry Standards against which they are tested, e.g. ASTM, ACI, BS, DIN, etc. and have calibrated different equipment/tools over the years.
Hands-on experience in conducting basic tests for a variety of soils, rocks, aggregates, concrete and related construction materials.
Should be able to perform new tests under supervision, with ability to learn the techniques quickly with the aid of Method Statements and Work Instructions and other documents.
Use and calibrate different equipment and tools.
Dexterity in handling different equipment, tools and chemicals.
Accuracy in reading results of tests and recording them correctly.
Analytical and problem-solving skills to solve routine problems independently and escalate other issues to superiors, well in time.
Attention to detail to ensure correctness of test data in datasheets and reports, by self-checks.
Communication skills to understand instructions in writing as well as spoken, and to convey clear messages about problems in testing or test results.
People skills to gain and get cooperation from another team members and be seen as an asset by team leaders.
Other related duties as required.
Skills & Qualification
BSc in Chemistry or Civil Engineering or equivalent in education and experience
1 – 4 years of experience

Entitled to refuse any to undertake any activity considered unsafe. Responsible for filling up of hazard observation card, wherever hazard has been noticed at site. Responsible for safe housekeeping of his work place. To stop any operation that is deemed unsafe To be able to operate fire extinguisher in case of fire To report an incident as soon as possible to immediate supervisor and HSE manager To complete HSE trainings as instructed to do so.
