Job Summary

A Senior Geotechnical Engineer position is available with Fugro Marine Geotechnical Team. The Marine Geotechnical service line is responsible for acquiring and interpreting accurate geotechnical data which enables our clients to make informed decisions during the engineering, design and construction phases of infrastructure development projects, ultimately reducing project risk and costs.

This role is part of the broader Fugro’s Marine Site Characterisation team of experts, who provide consultancy services to our clients within the fields of geology, geoscience, geophysics, and geotechnical engineering.

Some of our recent projects have included:

  • Site characterisation, desktop studies and finite element modelling for various offshore windfarm projects in the Asia Pacific region

  • Deep water geohazard assessments

  • Geotechnical pipeline design

  • Platform foundation design

  • Detailed geotechnical interpretative reporting for major offshore energy projects

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing accurate and customised services to clients by 1) performing complex activities around the process of acquiring, analysing, engineering, interpreting and reviewing of complete and high-quality geotechnical data, 2) providing geotechnical advice in multiple specialised technical disciplines, 3) developing solutions to clients by putting acquired geotechnical data into context, 4) solving complex problems or problems where precedent may not exist, 5) proposing improvements of research methods and quality systems, 6) sharing knowledge by writing procedures and courses and giving presentations, 7) providing technical input for tenders, 8) assisting with the establishment and compilation of project procedures, 9) making recommendations,  including any supplementary investigations, 10) contributing to acquisition activities and, 11) taking on tasks that have been escalated by more junior team members.

Responsibilities

Your day-to-day duties and focus will include:

  • Perform technical duties related to geotechnical engineering, working closely with the project team and technical lead

  • Utilise geotechnical software and tools to interpret data and assess geotechnical soil conditions and potential geotechnical hazards for project sites

  • Prepare or review laboratory testing programme for routine and advanced laboratory testing, and monitor progress through the laboratory

  • Evaluate in situ and laboratory test data, and develop foundation design parameters

  • Prepare calculation packs for all technical work completed and arrange review and approval by another technical lead

  • Analyse acquired geotechnical data and assist in the preparation of technical reports and documents to present the results of technical work

  • Perform other technical and engineering related tasks as required

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback on offshore and onshore workflows

  • Create presentations and workshops to inform clients about the outcomes and potential next steps in their offshore project developments, covering both renewables and oil/gas sectors

  • Collaborate and share information with team members, whilst also mentoring and supporting junior team members

  • Leads/coordinates the work of a small team and/or deputises the manager

  • Full compliance with Fugro and Client QHSSE requirements

Optionally, assume the role of shift geotechnical engineer or lead geotechnical engineer during fieldwork (on domestic and overseas offshore assignments), with the following responsibilities:

  • Perform sample logging and soil classification, and input of data into geotechnical software packages

  • Process in situ test data

  • Perform offshore laboratory tests as required

  • Maintain clear and organised records of test data

  • Generate field deliverables such as geotechnical logs

  • Assist in planning and coordinating field investigations

  • Collect field operations data from various departments for field reporting purpose

Requirement

Your success in securing this role will require:

  • Proven offshore and/or onshore experience (minimum 5 years) in geotechnical engineering discipline, preferably in support of the marine oil & gas and offshore wind farm projects

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in geotechnical or civil engineering, engineering geology or a related discipline

  • Be creative and willing to consider new approaches to solving problems

  • Enjoy a challenge, learning new skills, and be prepared to go the extra mile to meet our clients’ expectations

  • Proficiency in both verbal and written technical English

  • Excellent teamwork, strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with remote teams

  • Strong report writing skills

  • Data processing experience and ability, and programming skills (preferably in Python and VBA) will be an advantage

  • Practical offshore site investigation experience and/or being medically fit and committed to undertake offshore assignments up to  60, on rotation basis will be an advantage.
