Ben, Site Manager - Fugro Orca

“For me it's the fact that we can control an ROV remotely, while it is connected to a vessel with no one on board. Everything is controlled remotely. That's new tech, new equipment. It’s exciting!”

"We are essentially working with robots under water."

After completing my apprenticeship as a mechanical technician at a gas terminal in the UK, I was offered a job as an ROV pilot at Fugro in Aberdeen. It was cleaner than the other job offers I got. And the most technical job. I have been working with the Fugro Orca since then, evolving with the technology behind it.

Remote ROV Operations

The Site Manager Team oversees the maintenance of vessels and the associated fault finding. What I appreciate most is the opportunity to conduct a completely remote ROV using unmanned vessels. Everything is controlled remotely. That's new tech, new equipment. It’s exciting!

From trainee to Site Manager

Can't believe it has been 15 years with Fugro already. I started as a trainee, then progressed to become a ROV pilot. After a couple of years I was supervising. I've been 'on' the Orca since we've had it. And I have evolved with the Orca itself, and the technology that comes with it. And we are here now, where I am the Site Manager for the vessel I know so well.
