I did a graduation thesis with Fugro, the goal was to investigate what would be the best carbon neutral fuel alternative, for Fugro vessels specifically.

Graduation theses can easily end up in a desk drawer and never be looked into anymore. I am incredibly proud that my thesis led to a tangible result, with the Fugro Pioneer actually being converted at this moment. The maritime industry is known for being quite conservative, so for Fugro to commit to converting a vessel to sail on methanol is big deal.

Gaining experience with alternative fuel conversions

We work on various conversion projects, the Fugro Pioneer is just one of them. Fugro is converting this vessel because they have an ambitions aim to be net zero (carbon neutral) by 2035 and in order to gain experience and reach this target, we have to start converting our ships to alternative fuels that are actually capable of reaching zero emissions.

Ambitious goals

I think this is the first offshore vessel in service that was converted to sail on methanol and it can set an example for the maritime industry. In that regard Fugro is quite far ahead and ambitious, compared to other companies.
