Highway specialists collect thousands of lane kilometres of road data

Dutch local authority consortium

Under a multi-year contract with a Dutch local authority consortium, we are undertaking highway condition surveys across most of the provincial road network of the Netherlands. The riverbed was geologically complex, so we were tasked with gathering and interpreting additional data to inform design. We also completed a ‘driveability’ assessment to optimise foundation choices.

Ground penetration radar

Ground penetration radar (GPR) identifies below-surface changes in electrical properties by using high-frequency radio waves. It is a clean, accurate and efficient non-destructive method of delivering subsurface surveys

The contract was awarded to Fugro and KOAC-NPC, the Dutch pavement consultant with whom we signed a strategic agreement in 2013, combining our expertise in highway condition services. It was awarded on the basis of both quality and price by a procurement consortium representing Dutch provinces. This is the first time the provinces have established an integrated and unified specification for pavement quality measurements in the Netherlands.

We are utilising our world-renowned ARAN road analyser vehicles and performing initial data processing whilst KOAC-NPC is responsible for client specific data analysis and reporting in line with Dutch highways specifications and end-user pavement management systems. Road surface condition data from around 6,000 lane-kilometres of the provincial road network will be collected and processed each year.

Deliverables under the contract included road geometry, longitudinal and transverse profiles, texture profiles, and rutting, cracking and ravelling with options for edge damage and friction surveys.

We have provided complementary pavement investigations for projects across the Netherlands since the mid-1990s, including roads, airports, industrial areas and dike revetments.
