Fugro announced a landmark agreement with the Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI) Singapore*, hosted at the College of Design and Engineering at the National University of Singapore, to advance the practical application of innovative technologies for coastal protection and flood management solutions in urban and land-constrained areas. Established as a multi-institutional and inter-disciplinary research centre, CFI Singapore is the nation’s first Centre of Excellence dedicated to strengthening local capabilities and expertise in coastal protection and flood management research and solutions.

With mean sea levels projected to rise by 1.15m by 2100 in Singapore, coastal protection is paramount to the long-term viability and prosperity of the nation.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Fugro and CFI Singapore will leverage their joint capabilities and expertise to identify, assess, and develop various implementations for Singapore to effectively mitigate and adapt to rising sea levels.

The cooperation will explore the deployment of various maps and models to effectively monitor Singapore’s built and natural coastal, marine and land environments. By leveraging Geo-data and hydrospatial data, the developed solutions will enhance the country’s ability to improve predictive capabilities, optimise coastal infrastructure planning, and implement targeted interventions that strengthen resilience against rising sea levels.

Paul Seaton, Fugro’s Director in Climate and Nature APAC, said: “As a small island state where coastal retreat is not an option, Singapore faces unique challenges that demand innovative and proactive solutions. This partnership with CFI Singapore represents a significant step forward in our commitment to harnessing advanced Geo-data and hydrospatial technologies to protect and sustain urban and land-constrained environments.”

Professor Adrian Law, Executive Director and Director (Strategy, Partnerships and Technology Translation), CFI Singapore, said: “This MoU represents an important milestone in strengthening the partnership between CFI Singapore and Fugro. It underscores our mutual commitment in developing innovative solutions to enhance coastal protection and flood resilience by harnessing each other's expertise.”

* CFI Singapore is a key pillar under PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency’s S$125 million Coastal Protection and Flood Management Research Programme (CFRP), which galvanises research and technology development in coastal protection and flood management. More info: https://cde.nus.edu.sg/cfisg/.
