Preparation for the installation of one of the world’s largest fibre-optic communications cables is underway. Spanning approximately 36,000 km, the 2Africa cable will provide enhanced connectivity to at least 16 African countries and play a crucial role in supporting economic growth, digital transformation, and bridging the digital divide across the continent. This project is a significant step towards achieving the African Union’s ambition to ensure internet access for all by 2030.

Fugro’s advanced survey vessels are circumnavigating the entire African coast to determine the safest and most efficient route for laying the cable along the seabed and bringing it onshore. These surveys involve high-resolution mapping of the seafloor, environmental assessments, and engineering analysis to mitigate potential risks and optimise the cable’s longevity and performance.

Similar to the pioneering engineers who laid the first subsea cables in the 1800s, this ambitious project presents numerous challenges. These include unpredictable weather conditions, complex marine environments, and logistical restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, Fugro’s expertise in geophysical and geotechnical surveys, coupled with state-of-the-art technology, ensures that the project progresses efficiently and successfully, supporting the long-term vision of improved global connectivity and economic inclusion for millions of people.
