The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet. It’s responsible for 50% of the oxygen we breathe. It captures around 25% of all human-made carbon emissions, making it one of the world’s best carbon sinks. And it’s a source of food and livelihood for more than 3.5 billion people. In short, we can’t do without it.
Filling the gaps
That’s why we’re proud to lead the private industry in support of two global ocean science initiatives: The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Seabed 2030 Project.
These initiatives aim to fill the sizable gaps in ocean data, information, and knowledge. If all goes well, they’ll help reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health. And support the development of a sustainable ocean economy. Around the world.
Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) is a multifaceted initiative. Its aim? Develop a common, global framework for ocean science. Not just to help restore ocean health, but also to help countries create better conditions for sustainable ocean development.
Seabed 2030
The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project is a collaborative effort between The Nippon Foundation of Japan and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO). Its goal: have the ocean completely mapped by 2030. And compile all bathymetric data into the GEBCO Ocean Map, which will be freely available.
